Founded in January 2002, the organization was first set up to help just students who had suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury. At the time Director Payne was the student representative for the Oklahoma Association And Higher Education And Disabilities. The summer of 2004 after having attended the National Youth with disabilities Leadership Conference in Washington DC, Director Payne decided to turn TBI Raiders in a volunteer service. Then in 2005, it was talked amongst the director/founder and the online members as to whether or not include young adults who have suffered a TBI. It was decided to include them in the mission statement. Also in '05, Director Payne was asked to write a paper on disabilities. She did but she highlighted Traumatic Brain Injuries and used that as an example to show what life was like for someone who lived with a disability. The following year in May she was recognized in an Oklahoma House Resolution Bill for the work she does to help Traumatic Brain Injury survivors. Then that following September she spoke before the Health and Human Resources committee for the Oklahoma House of Representatives when they did a study on Traumatic Brain Injury. In 2008 Alicia met up with those who would come to be on the Executive Board and the lawyer for the organization. It was decided not to pursue becoming a non-profit until volunteers became actively involved.
